ToT: Guilty Pleasures: Movies

This week we are discussing our  top three (there had to be a limit) "guilty pleasure" movies. These are not the huge blockbusters that everyone lines up to go see at the theater.  Nor are they the treasured and beloved cult favorites (think: "Dirty Dancing," "Friday," "Animal House.").  The movies we are writing about this week are movies that we enjoy watching, but not necessarily admitting to it.  They are the movies we watch when we are alone, maybe because no one else wants to watch them with us.  So, here we go...

I'm a huge movie buff  (this was my topic choice), so it was hard for me to narrow down my list to three, and it was also hard for me to decide which movies I would consider "guilty pleasures."  It's hard not to spout off why I love certain films such as "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings."  I though those movies would be considered too main stream to fit into the "guilty pleasure category."  So, after much thought and deliberation, I've finally found my three choices.  They are as follows:

French Kiss Poster

  1. "French Kiss" This is a movie starring Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline, and Timothy Hutton.  It was made in 1995.  I. Love. This. Movie.  I think I almost wore out the VHS tape I had of it.  I seriously need to get it on DVD.  This is just a feel good happy love story about girl losing boy to hot french tart, girl chasing after boy, girl finding handsome, yet annoying stranger along the way.  Girl gets boy back, only to realize boy is a nitwit, and girl is too good for boy.  Oh, and girl falls for annoyingly handsome stranger along the way.  Yup-all that set in France with french accents.  So good.  It makes me happy every time I watch it.  I really think what I enjoy most is that the girl doesn't end up having to change herself to win the boy back.  She ends up finding her inner strengths and courage, and herself.  When she catches up with her lost "boy," he sees her inner beauty, and is ready to have her back.  She realizes she is better than that.  She knows what she wants, and what her life has been lacking.  She now values herself more.  I like that she doesn't go running right back into his arms.  It has just the right ending in my opinion.

2. "The Princess Diaries 2:Royal Engagement" Yes, that's right, I said 2.  I have only seen the first "Princess Diaries" one time, and it didn't really do anything for me.  For some reason, the second movie always makes me sit down and watch.  I'm not sure why.  It was running on cable for a stint, and I seriously think I watched it every time it came on.  It's just a happy go lucky no brainer movie.  Oh, and Julie Andrews is in it-you can't go wrong there.  Princess Mia (okay now that is just a coincidence. I did NOT name my daughter after the main character in this movie) is strong willed, and smart.  She makes the decision to trust her heart instead of playing it safe and marrying someone she is not in love with.  Plus, I like Anne Hathaway, too.  Enough time spent on this movie.

3. "Moulin Rouge": I think there are either two camps concerning this movie-you either love it or hate it.  There is not a lot of middle ground.  I am in the "love" camp.  I was studying abroad in Australia when this movie came out.  It was wildly popular there, and I loved it.  I even got a free movie poster when we went to see it at the local theater in Brisbane.  The poster used to hang in my laundry room at my old house, so I could day dream about the movie while folding my towels. ha. I love all of the music in this movie, and Ewan McGregor is just dreamy as Christian, a love sick writer.  Just to give an example of how popular the movie was in Australia, when we went to book our trip to Cairns, Australia, the travel agent was pretty rude to me because my last name was Ziegler.  When she read it, she sniffed disdainfully, and said, just like the bad man in Moulin Rouge, Herr Ziegler.  Well, no actually, not just like the bad man, because his name was ZiDler.  That is a great reason not to give good customer service to someone...but I digress.  I even have a couple of songs from this movie on my ipod-"Roxanne!" "Your Song," and "CanCan."  Okay, so I pretty much had the whole soundtrack on my ipod.  Anyways, I can't explain it, but I just get swept away in the love story of this movie.

So there you have it, my three guilty pleasure movies.  Don't forget to check out some of the flicks the other ToT ladies love.
